Alcoholism Handout

Definition - an addiction to the consumption of alcohol or the mental illness and compulsive behavior resulting from alcohol dependency.

Alcoholism has little to do with what kind of alcohol someone drinks, how long they have been drinking, or even exactly how much alcohol one consumes. But it has a great deal to do with a person's uncontrollable need for alcohol.

Studies show that children of alcoholics are affected less by alcohol and therefore The problem is that they are more likely to be alcoholics because alcohol has less of an effect of them as a result they do not think it is a problem and they drink more.

the genes that have been associated with alcohol dependence most often, are the ones whose proteins brake down alcohol more actively in alcoholics than non-alcoholics. These genes have been found most commonly in the chromosome 4. The exact AGCT's for alcoholism have yet to be found.

Alcoholism is not only passed by genetics many people that have a problem with alcohol dependency have no family history of alcoholism, but they drink too much to the point where they are addicted and they need it.
